European Metal Recycling (EMR)

Location: Salford

Duration: 1 year


An average of 45 hours per week, Monday – Friday (including occasional Saturdays)

6am starts, 30-minute lunch (unpaid)


Starting at £5.55 per hour, with the potential to increase to £9 per hour.

About the role

The Supply Chain Large Goods Vehicle Level 2 Apprenticeship is an excellent opportunity to begin a career in logistics. As a committed employer, on successful completion of the programme, there is the potential for further progression and development. You have the chance to acquire a Class 1 licence and, as you will be working within the Transport department, career progression up to Transport Manager.

Although EMR drivers do not work the unsociable hours expected in this profession, the environment in which they operate is challenging. You are responsible for a vehicle that can be very dangerous on the road and so you must be vigilant and responsible at all times.

Roadside facilities vary and may not be the most inviting of places and much time will be spent in a cab of your vehicle. Smoking is not permitted in vehicle cabs.

Day-to-day duties

•Driving an LGV safely and in accordance with the law, company policies and procedures.

•Operating within speed limits and advice given in the Highway Code.

•Using vehicle seat belts correctly.

•Working safely when outside the vehicle.

•Operating LGV and associated equipment in line with licence, competence and company requirements. 

•Driving within the tachograph law and driver hours limits.

•Carrying out daily defect checking, including tyre and wheel nut checking with the aim of maintaining roadworthiness.

•Operating efficiently on sites.

•Completing paperwork carefully and accurately.

•Supervising the loading of the vehicle so that products are safely loaded and secured.

•Maintaining the cleanliness of the driving cab.

•Ensuring accidents are kept to a minimum. 

Essential skills

  • GCSE English and Mathematics, Grade A – C (or equivalent) or willing to work towards it.
  • Clean driving licence.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions.
  • Driving experience on UK roads.
  • Ability to use smartphone / handheld computer.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Able to follow instructions.
  • Effective communicator.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Calm under pressure.
  • Ability to assess risk.
